GRAMMAR IN PRACTICE

Chinese measure words: 本、张、杯 and counting practice

When counting ordinary objects, start with number + measure word + noun: 三本书. Choose the measure word for what you are counting and how it is grouped. A cup of tea and a pot of tea use different units even though both contain tea.

Learn a useful phrase, not an isolated label

Learn 一本书, 一张票 and 一杯茶 as small phrases. Add a real purpose: 我要两张票 or 请给我一杯茶. This helps connect the classifier with a communicative choice rather than an empty slot in a table.

个 is common, but it does not replace every established pairing. For books, practise 本; for flat ticket-like objects, practise 张. Learn conventional combinations along with shape clues, because shape alone will not predict every classifier.

The unit can change the meaning

两杯茶 counts two cups of tea; 两壶茶 counts two pots. Both are possible, but they describe different orders. If the prompt asks for cups, choosing 壶 is a meaning mismatch even though the phrase is grammatical.

Use 两 naturally before common classifiers in phrases such as 两本书. Use 二 when reading a digit or a sequence such as 二号. This lesson concerns ordinary object counting; do not turn it into a claim that 二 can never appear before any unit.

Count the noun, then check the request

Find the noun and ask what one item means here. Then choose the quantity and unit. Finally, read the whole order: 三本书 and 一本书 are equally grammatical, but only one matches a request for three books.

Original examples: understand, then adapt

1. 我借了两本小说。

Wǒ jiè le liǎng běn xiǎoshuō.

I borrowed two novels.

本 counts the books; 两 supplies the quantity two.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

我借了两张小说。

张 does not conventionally count bound novels; 本 is the intended unit here.

2. 请给我三张明信片。

Qǐng gěi wǒ sān zhāng míngxìnpiàn.

Please give me three postcards.

张 is the conventional classifier for individual postcards.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

请给我三本明信片。

Three individual postcards use 张. 本 would require a different object or grouping, such as a postcard collection in book form.

3. 我们要一壶茶和两个杯子。

Wǒmen yào yì hú chá hé liǎng ge bēizi.

We would like a pot of tea and two cups.

壶 measures the tea; 个 counts the cups requested with it.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

我们要一杯茶和两个杯子。

This is grammatical but requests a cup of tea rather than a pot. Preserve the intended serving unit.

4. 桌上有两瓶水。

Zhuō shàng yǒu liǎng píng shuǐ.

There are two bottles of water on the table.

瓶 counts the bottled servings of water.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

桌上有两杯水。

杯 is also possible, but it describes cupfuls rather than bottles. The container changes the quantity unit.

5. 我想买一件外套。

Wǒ xiǎng mǎi yí jiàn wàitào.

I want to buy a coat.

件 is a conventional classifier for an individual coat.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

我想买一条外套。

条 commonly pairs with items such as 裤子, but it is not the conventional choice for 外套.

6. 请在二号窗口取两张票。

Qǐng zài èr hào chuāngkǒu qǔ liǎng zhāng piào.

Please collect two tickets at window number two.

二 names the window number; 两 counts the tickets.

Compare structure, meaning and other valid expressions

请在两号窗口取二张票。

In this ordinary service request, 二号 and 两张 are the natural choices. This distinction is not a rule against 二 in every measurement context.

Answer first, then check the reasoning

1. Complete: 我想借三___书。Choose 本、杯 or 张.

Answer and explanation

本: 三本书 counts three books. 杯 measures cupfuls and 张 normally counts sheets or ticket-like items; neither matches books here.

2. A customer wants two cups of tea. Is 我要两壶茶 a faithful answer?

Answer and explanation

No. The phrase is grammatical but orders two pots. Use 我要两杯茶 to preserve the requested unit.

3. Complete both phrases: ___张票; ___号窗口. Use the natural forms of “two”.

Answer and explanation

两张票;二号窗口。The first counts objects; the second names a numbered window. They serve different purposes.

4. You need one sheet of paper and two pens. Complete 一___纸、两___笔. Why not 本 for the loose sheet?

Answer and explanation

一张纸、两支笔。张 counts a loose sheet and 支 counts individual pens. 本 would refer to a bound item such as a notebook, changing what is requested.

Change the conditions and make it yours

Ask for two notebooks and three postcards. Then change only the notebook quantity to one.

Show one possible response

我要两本笔记本和三张明信片。现在改成一本笔记本,明信片还是三张。

Use 本 for the notebooks and 张 for the postcards. Change two to one only for notebooks; leave the postcards at three.
