SPEAKING IN CONTEXT
Order a drink in Chinese: listening and speaking practice
A clear drink order gives the item, relevant preferences and whether it is to go. When the server asks a choice question, answer that choice directly. In this lesson, practise one short request, one follow-up answer and a final confirmation.

您好,我想要一杯热拿铁,不加糖,带走。好的,您需要大杯还是小杯?小杯就好,谢谢。

Nín hǎo, wǒ xiǎng yào yì bēi rè nátiě, bù jiā táng, dàizǒu. Hǎo de, nín xūyào dà bēi háishi xiǎo bēi? Xiǎo bēi jiù hǎo, xièxie.
English meaning
Hello, I would like a hot latte, no sugar, to go. Certainly. Would you like a large or a small? A small is fine, thank you.
Shadow this sentence
我想要一杯热拿铁,不加糖,带走。
Listening cues and practice method
Group the request into drink, sugar preference and takeaway. Answer 大杯还是小杯 directly with the cup size. One synthesized voice reads both roles; the transcript marks the turns through their wording.
Read the dialogue by role
- Customer
您好,我想要一杯热拿铁,不加糖,带走。
- Server
好的,您需要大杯还是小杯?
- Customer
小杯就好,谢谢。
Your speaking goal
Start with 您好,我想要…… to make a polite request. Put the number and measure word before the drink: 一杯热拿铁. Add short preference phrases such as 不加糖 and 带走. You do not need a long, complex sentence to communicate an order successfully.
Listen once without reading. Identify the drink, temperature, sugar preference, size and takeaway choice. On a second listen, notice that the size is supplied after the server’s question rather than in the opening request.
Why these replies work
大杯还是小杯? asks you to choose a size. 小杯就好 answers the requested information. 好的 alone acknowledges the question but does not choose a size. 热的 answers temperature, so it would not resolve this particular question. Match your reply to what was asked, even if you already know the words you want to say.
不加糖 means do not add sugar. It is a preference, not a guarantee about every ingredient. If an ingredient matters, ask whether the drink contains it and confirm with staff. This language drill does not establish what a real café can provide.
A three-pass shadowing routine
First repeat the request in chunks: 我想要/一杯热拿铁/不加糖/带走. Next, play the whole clip and answer the size question aloud before checking the transcript. Finally, cover the text and change the drink and size. Keep the request polite and the details consistent.
The supplied audio uses a synthetic voice for all turns; follow the transcript to tell the customer from the server. Slower playback helps you hear word boundaries but is not a pronunciation score. Return to normal speed before your last attempt.
Swap a phrase and change one condition
Change one condition at a time and keep the remaining facts consistent. These alternatives are not synonyms.
- 一杯热拿铁 → 一杯热茶
- 带走 → 在这里喝
- 小杯 → 大杯
Common pitfalls: wording, context and information
大杯还是小杯?——好的。
A response for this context
大杯还是小杯?——小杯,谢谢。
好的 acknowledges the question but leaves the size undecided. Give one of the requested choices.
我要一茶。
A response for this context
我想要一杯茶。
Use a serving unit for the drink. 想要 makes this request less abrupt; 要 itself is not always wrong.
Answer first, then check the reasoning
1. Which detail is supplied only after the follow-up question?
Answer and explanation
The small size: 小杯就好. Temperature, sugar and takeaway were already in the first request.
2. Why is “好的” insufficient as an answer to “大杯还是小杯”?
Answer and explanation
It acknowledges the question without selecting a size. Add 大杯 or 小杯 so the order can be completed.
3. Does “不加糖” mean the customer wants an iced drink?
Answer and explanation
No. Sugar and temperature are different dimensions. The recording explicitly says 热拿铁.
Answer three prompts in your own words
Speak first, then draft if helpful. Drafts stay on this page, are not uploaded and are not automatically graded. The references are possible answers, not the only answers.
1. You want a large hot tea, no added sugar, to drink here. Make the opening request, then answer “大杯还是小杯?” without changing the order.
Reference and self-check
您好,我想要一杯热茶,不加糖,在这里喝。——大杯还是小杯?——大杯,谢谢。
Check four details: tea; hot; no added sugar; here. Then check that your follow-up answer chooses large. Other polite phrasing is also possible.
2. The server repeats “iced tea”. You asked for hot tea. Correct only the temperature politely.
Reference and self-check
不好意思,我要热茶,不是冰的,谢谢。
Keep tea as the drink and correct iced to hot; do not invent a new size or sugar choice.
3. You have ordered a small hot latte with no added sugar, to go. Confirm all four details in one short reply.
Reference and self-check
对,小杯热拿铁,不加糖,带走,谢谢。
Include small, hot latte, no added sugar and takeaway. A short list is sufficient.
