HSK 2.0 vs 3.0: 2026 changes and a practice guide
The official HSK 3.0 written samples checked on October 20, 2026 have 70, 72 and 82 items at levels 4–6, with paper-based totals of about 85, 110 and 125 minutes. Writing tasks also change. Use the sourced comparison below to choose materials for your booked version. MandarinGo’s current HSK 1–6 pages provide original skill practice, not official papers or a verified HSK 3.0 mock exam.
What the official announcement says
Chinese Test Service Website announces a worldwide HSK 3.0 launch on December 13, 2026. We checked this announcement on October 20, 2026. Your test center’s booking information is the place to confirm the version and arrangements for your own session.
How to interpret the labels on our pages
The level in a page title helps you choose a starting point; it is not a certificate of syllabus coverage. Our questions combine vocabulary, sentence patterns, short reading and listening comprehension. A page’s correct-answer count describes that set only. It cannot be converted into an official HSK score or a prediction of passing.
Some advanced exercises focus on reasoning, evidence and cautious wording. These are useful Chinese reading skills, but the presence of a skill does not establish that an item matches an official exam task. We retain existing question links so that saved notes and references remain usable.
A practical version check before studying
First, record the date, level and version shown on your booking. Second, obtain the corresponding official syllabus and sample paper from the Chinese Test Service Website. Third, compare the skills, item types, timing and scoring with the resource you plan to use. If those details are missing, treat it as supplementary practice rather than a timed mock exam.
Use existing questions without confusing versions
Try a short set without viewing the answers. Sort errors into vocabulary, grammar, evidence and listening detail. Read the explanation, then explain why the other options fail. Finally, write or say a new example with the same pattern. This trains transferable skills while official sample papers guide exam-specific practice.
HSK 4–6: what changes in the official sample papers?
The HSK 3.0 sample bundle linked from the official website shows 70 numbered written-test items at level 4, 72 at level 5 and 82 at level 6. Their paper-based totals are approximately 85, 110 and 125 minutes. These figures describe the published samples checked on October 20, 2026; they are not counts for MandarinGo’s skill exercises or a guarantee for every future exam session.
A numbered item is not an audio clip or a reading passage: one material can support several questions. The totals below include writing tasks, which require an original response rather than a multiple-choice answer.
| Level / version | Listening + reading + writing | Total items | Paper-based total |
|---|---|---|---|
| HSK 4 · 2.0 | 45 + 40 + 15 | 100 | About 105 minutes |
| HSK 4 · 3.0 sample | 32 + 32 + 6 | 70 | About 85 minutes |
| HSK 5 · 2.0 | 45 + 45 + 10 | 100 | About 125 minutes |
| HSK 5 · 3.0 sample | 35 + 35 + 2 | 72 | About 110 minutes |
| HSK 6 · 2.0 | 50 + 50 + 1 | 101 | About 140 minutes |
| HSK 6 · 3.0 sample | 40 + 40 + 2 | 82 | About 125 minutes |

The new writing tasks need different practice
In the level 4 sample, five picture-and-word sentence tasks are followed by one topic composition of at least 80 Chinese characters. Practise describing what an image actually shows, using the supplied word naturally, then connecting several relevant ideas in a short paragraph.
The level 5 sample has two writing tasks: a story based on four pictures, at least 100 Chinese characters, and a topic composition of at least 200 characters. Practise keeping a clear event sequence and developing a view with relevant reasons; the old two short compositions of about 80 characters are not the new sample’s structure.
The level 6 sample asks for an applied writing task of at least 150 Chinese characters and a topic composition of at least 300 characters. In the first task, make the audience, purpose and required information clear; in the second, develop an argument without inventing evidence. This differs from the legacy reading-and-summary task. These minimum lengths are requirements in the checked samples, not an independently verified scoring rubric.

Paper-based timing and the separate speaking samples
For the checked 3.0 paper-based samples, listening / reading / writing take approximately 20 / 30 / 25 minutes at level 4, 25 / 35 / 40 at level 5 and 30 / 40 / 45 at level 6. Each total also includes five minutes to fill in personal information and five minutes to transfer listening answers. Do not label these totals as computer-based timings or subtract time to invent a computer-based specification.
The official bundle also contains separate level 4–6 speaking samples. Each has two listen-and-retell tasks, one picture-speaking task and two question responses. Level 4 takes about 20 minutes and levels 5–6 about 23 minutes, including preparation. A listening-reading-writing exercise page therefore does not cover the complete speaking component. Confirm the subjects required by your booked session.

How to avoid mixing old and new official information
When checked on October 20, 2026, the ordinary official HSK 4–6 introduction pages still described the legacy 100 / 100 / 101-item structure, while the separately linked HSK 3.0 sample bundle used 70 / 72 / 82. The presence of “HSK 3.0” in a site navigation menu does not make every page a new-version specification. Check the document, its tasks and its date.
The new syllabus cover says “effective July 2026”, while the launch announcement gives December 13, 2026 for the worldwide launch. A document’s effective date and the scheduled launch of an exam are different facts. For a specific booking, follow the exam service and test center’s current arrangements.
Our review has not confirmed the new official scoring conversion, listening playback count or detailed computer-based transitions. We therefore report practice accuracy and learning feedback, not a predicted official score or pass/fail result. This is a gap in our verification, not a claim that no official guidance exists.
