WRITING ERROR CLINIC

Common Chinese word order and grammar mistakes by native language

When learners write unnatural Chinese, the mistake is rarely random—it usually mirrors the grammar of their first language. Recognizing your own language’s transfer trap lets you self-correct before submitting your writing.

Public practice

Read the examples, answer the original tasks and reveal model answers on this page. No account or microphone is needed for these text-based exercises.

Personalized AI practice

New users complete a short assessment, sign in and consent to AI text processing. Usage allowances depend on the current plan; AI feedback can be wrong.

Who is this practice for?

For independent learners who want to build and vary spoken answers to everyday prompts. The public tasks can be spoken aloud; AI feedback uses text and does not score pronunciation, tones or pauses.

Quick answer

To fix common Chinese word-order mistakes across native languages: place Time and Place before the verb (English/French/Russian trap), keep the verb before the object unless using 把 and watch kanji false friends (Japanese/Korean trap), place all modifiers and relative clauses before the noun with 的 (Thai/Indonesian trap), and use 很 instead of 是 before adjectives.

1. 改正印欧语系母语者常见的语序错误:“我喝咖啡在办公室每天早上。”
Answer and explanation

我每天早上在办公室喝咖啡。

Unlike English, French or Russian, Mandarin places both time (每天早上) and location (在办公室) before the action verb (喝咖啡).

2. 改正泰语/印尼语母语者常见的定语后置错误:“那件衣服我妈妈买的很好看。”
Answer and explanation

我妈妈买的那件衣服很好看。

Unlike Thai or Indonesian, Mandarin places the relative clause (我妈妈买的) in front of the head noun (那件衣服), linked by 的.

3. 改正形容词谓语句常见错误:“今天的工作我是非常忙。”
Answer and explanation

今天的工作我很忙。

Predicate adjectives in Mandarin link with a degree adverb such as 很 (我很忙) rather than the copula 是 (*我是忙), and avoid stacking redundant degree adverbs.

Try it with a real sentence

Chinese example

我昨天买的中文书非常有意思。

Pinyin
Wǒ zuótiān mǎi de zhōngwén shū fēicháng yǒu yìsi.
Meaning
The Chinese book that I bought yesterday is very interesting.
Why it works
The relative clause (我昨天买的) comes before the noun (中文书), and the predicate uses a single degree adverb (非常) without 是.
Original sentence
我学习中文昨天在学校。
Suggested correction
我昨天在学校学习中文。

Time and location normally come before the action in this neutral statement.

Original sentence
我买了一个书。
Suggested correction
我买了一本书。

本 is a common measure word for books. Use 一本书 rather than 一个书.

Original sentence
这是我书。
Suggested correction
这是我的书。

的 marks possession here: 我的书 means “my book”.

Your turn

Put the modifier clause before the noun with 的: The tea that I drank at the cafe today is very fragrant.

Show answer and explanation

我今天在咖啡店喝的茶很香。

The relative clause (我昨天买的) comes before the noun (中文书), and the predicate uses a single degree adverb (非常) without 是.

Read the explanation, hide the answer, then produce a new sentence of your own.

English, French and Russian speakers: putting time and place at the end

Indo-European languages naturally place location and time after the verb (‘I studied Chinese at school yesterday’). In Mandarin, both time and location must precede the action verb: 我昨天在学校学习中文 (Subject + Time + Place + Verb + Object).

Japanese and Korean speakers: SOV verb-at-the-end and kanji false friends

Because Japanese and Korean place the main verb at the very end of the clause (SOV), learners often misplace objects or negation in longer HSK 4–5 sentences. Also watch out for shared characters whose meanings differ in modern Mandarin, such as 勉强 (reluctant/forced, not ‘study’) or 手纸 (toilet paper, not ‘letter’).

Thai and Indonesian speakers: placing adjectives or clauses after the noun

In Thai and Indonesian, modifiers and relative clauses follow the noun (‘buku yang saya beli kemarin’ / ‘กาแฟร้อน’). In Mandarin, every modifier—whether a single adjective or a full clause—must come before the noun, usually linked by 的: 我昨天买的书 (the book I bought yesterday).

Universal trap: stacking degree adverbs or overusing 是

Do not use 是 (to be) directly before an adjective (*我是累); use a degree word such as 很 instead (我很累). Conversely, avoid stacking two degree adverbs of the same type together (*这本书非常特别好); pick one clear modifier (这本书非常好).
