HSK 3–5 GRAMMAR

Chinese 把 (bǎ) sentence structure guide: word order, complements and drills

The 把 (bǎ) construction is a core milestone in HSK 3 and HSK 4 writing, especially in word-reordering tasks. Mandarin uses 把 to bring a known, definite object before the verb whenever the action moves, changes, finishes or disposes of that object.

Quick answer

The Mandarin 把 (bǎ) construction follows Subject + (Negation/Time) + 把 + Definite Object + Verb + Result/Directional Complement (我把那本书看完了). Never leave the verb bare without a complement, and always place negation (没 / 别 / 不要) before 把 rather than before the verb.

1. 哪句“把”字句的语法和结果补语使用是正确的?
Answer and explanation

我把那封信写完了。

A 把 sentence requires a result or complement after the verb: 把那封信写完了 shows the letter was finished. Leaving 写 bare (*把那封信写) is incomplete.

2. 在“把”字句中加入否定词“还没”,应该放在哪个位置?
Answer and explanation

我还没把行李整理好。

Negation words such as 还没, 没 or 别 must always precede 把 (我还没把行李整理好), never sit between 把 and the main verb.

3. 下列哪个动词表示心理喜好,通常不能改成“把”字句?
Answer and explanation

喜欢(*把茶喜欢)

Verbs of emotion or mental state like 喜欢 do not physically move, alter or dispose of an object, so they use standard SVO order (我喜欢茶) instead of 把.

Try it with a real sentence

Chinese example

我还没把今天的中文作业做完。

Pinyin
Wǒ hái méi bǎ jīntiān de zhōngwén zuòyè zuò wán.
Meaning
I have not finished today’s Chinese homework yet.
Why it works
The negation 还没 goes before 把, the definite object (今天的中文作业) follows 把, and the verb takes the result complement 完 (做完).
Original sentence
我学习中文昨天在学校。
Suggested correction
我昨天在学校学习中文。

Time and location normally come before the action in this neutral statement.

Original sentence
我买了一个书。
Suggested correction
我买了一本书。

本 is a common measure word for books. Use 一本书 rather than 一个书.

Original sentence
这是我书。
Suggested correction
这是我的书。

的 marks possession here: 我的书 means “my book”.

Your turn

Use 请把 + Object + Verb + Directional complement: Please bring that cup of tea on the table over here.

Show answer and explanation

请把桌上的那杯茶拿过来。

The negation 还没 goes before 把, the definite object (今天的中文作业) follows 把, and the verb takes the result complement 完 (做完).

The core formula: Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Result/Complement

In standard SVO order, objects follow the verb. When you specify what happened to a definite object—such as where it ended up or how it was finished—use Subject + 把 + Object + Verb + Complement: 请把你的报告发给我 (Please send your report to me).

Rule 1: The verb in a 把 sentence cannot stand bare

Because 把 focuses on the result or disposal of the object, you cannot end a 把 sentence with a bare single-character verb (*我把书看). Always attach a resultative complement (看完), directional complement (拿出来), prepositional destination (放在桌子上) or 了/一下.

Rule 2: Place adverbs and negation (没 / 别 / 不要) before 把

Modal verbs, time words and negation markers must go in front of 把, never between 把 and the verb: 我还没把作业做完 (I have not finished my homework yet), not *我把作业没做完.

When not to use 把

Avoid 把 with verbs of pure perception, emotion or existence that do not affect the object—such as 看见 (see), 听见 (hear), 喜欢 (like), 知道 (know) or 有 (have). Use regular Subject + Verb + Object order for those verbs.
